Accelerated Resolution Therapy® (ART®) Online

Accelerated Resolution Therapy® (ART®) is a brief, evidence-based psychotherapy that helps reduce emotional distress linked to difficult life experiences. ART works by changing how distressing memories are stored in the brain, allowing emotional and physical reactions to settle while the factual memory remains.

ART uses guided eye movements and visualization to help the brain reprocess challenging experiences safely and effectively. Many clients notice meaningful improvement in one to five sessions, making ART a focused and time-efficient therapy option.

How Accelerated Resolution Therapy® Works

ART is based on how the brain and nervous system respond to stressful experiences. Even when an event is over, your body may continue reacting as if it is still happening.

During ART, your therapist guides you through gentle side-to-side eye movements while you focus on specific images, sensations, or emotions. This supports the brain’s natural memory reconsolidation process, allowing experiences to be updated and stored without the same emotional intensity.

A key component of ART is Voluntary Image Replacement, where distressing images are replaced with neutral or positive ones. This helps reduce emotional triggers while preserving the facts of what occurred.

What to Expect in an ART Session

ART sessions are typically 60 minutes and follow a clear, structured process guided by a trained clinician. You remain fully awake, present, and in control throughout the session.

You do not need to describe personal experiences in detail to benefit from ART. Many people appreciate this approach, especially if talking extensively feels overwhelming. Sessions are often described as calm, focused, and gentle, with many clients leaving feeling lighter and more settled.

How ART Is Different From Other Therapy Approaches

Unlike approaches that rely on repeated discussion of distressing experiences, ART is designed to minimize emotional overwhelm. Experiences are recalled briefly and then actively transformed, rather than revisited repeatedly.

ART shares some similarities with EMDR, including the use of eye movements, but differs in structure and delivery. ART sessions are more directive, follow a clear protocol, and are often completed in fewer sessions than many traditional therapy approaches.

ART is not hypnosis. You remain alert, aware, and in control at all times.

What Accelerated Resolution Therapy® Can Help With

ART has been used successfully to support clients experiencing:

  • Stress-related symptoms
  • Anxiety and persistent worry
  • Low mood and emotional heaviness
  • Grief and life transitions
  • Phobias and fears
  • Sleep difficulties, including distressing dreams
  • Performance-related stress
  • Relationship and family challenges
  • Ongoing tension or physical discomfort with emotional components

Your therapist will help determine whether ART is appropriate for your goals and concerns.

Is ART Evidence-Based?

Yes. Accelerated Resolution Therapy® is supported by peer-reviewed research, including controlled clinical studies. Research shows significant and lasting improvements in emotional distress and stress-related symptoms, often within a small number of sessions.

Ongoing research continues to explore how ART works and where it can be most helpful.

How Many ART Sessions Will I Need?

Each person’s needs are different, but many clients notice improvement within one to five sessions. In some cases, multiple related experiences can be addressed together. Your therapist will work with you to create a pace and plan that feels supportive and manageable.

ART and Online Therapy

Some clinicians offer ART through secure telehealth platforms using adapted visual tracking methods. However, the developer of ART does not endorse virtual delivery, and ART is generally considered most effective when provided in person. Not all clients or concerns are appropriate for online ART, and this will be discussed during consultation.

Is Accelerated Resolution Therapy® Right for Me?

ART may be a good fit if you feel stuck with emotional reactions, stress responses, or patterns that have not fully resolved through other approaches. It can be helpful both as a first therapy option and for those seeking a different path forward.

A consultation with an ART-trained clinician can help determine whether this approach aligns with your needs.

Accelerated Resolution Therapy® and ART® are registered service marks of the Rosenzweig Center for Rapid Recovery (RCRR), used with permission.
